Girls’ Group

Insight Intern Kijana Rose co-founded an organization called the Girls’ Group at Boston Latin High School, where she is a student. The organization serves as a support network for female students of all ages and is strongly supported by both students and faculty.

The Girls’ Group was in part inspired by the Girls’ Advisory Council, an organization affiliated with Boston City Hall that identifies common problems among young girls and brainstorms solutions.

The Girls’ Group aims to create a safe community where students can bond and support and inspire each other. To determine the focus of their efforts, the Group conducted a survey of girls at Boston Latin to learn about their needs and what issues are important to them. The results of the survey helped inform what resources they provide to their membership. Initiatives include a mentoring program that pairs younger and older female students.

Insight Analyst Rachel Milner Gillers and Kijana Rose recently conducted a workshop on communicating with peers, significant others, teachers, and parents. Future workshops will focus on non-violent communication, rape awareness, peer pressure, and stress relief.
